NotebookLM vs Harkwire
NotebookLM (now Gemini Notebook) makes a free two-host audio show, but every episode is manual. Harkwire, from $4.99 USD/month, has it waiting at 7am.
If you want your newsletters as audio each morning, the choice is Google's NotebookLM or Harkwire. NotebookLM is free and its two-host audio is good, but every episode is a job you run by hand: add the sources, generate, wait, download. Harkwire runs the job for you, and the episode waits in your feed at 7am.
The short answer
For research you run yourself, NotebookLM is stronger: free, cited, and built for control, but every episode is manual. For newsletters you just want to hear, Harkwire runs itself: forward once, and a two-host episode is waiting in your private feed by 7am.
What does NotebookLM cost?
Google renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook in July 2026. The product and the limits stayed the same. The free tier gives you 100 notebooks, up to 50 sources per notebook, 50 chats a day, and 3 Audio Overviews a day, per Google's own limits page.
Higher tiers raise the daily cap: 6 Audio Overviews on Google AI Plus, 20 on Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month, and 100 or 200 on Google AI Ultra at $249.99 a month.
What does the audio sound like?
Audio Overviews are spoken discussions of whatever you put in a notebook. The default is Deep Dive, a two-host conversation that sounds like a podcast. Brief runs one to two minutes, Critique reviews your material, and Debate has the hosts argue, each in Short, Default, or Long and multiple languages, with a focus prompt. What you get back is a downloadable file and a public link.
What does a morning with NotebookLM take?
You add every newsletter by hand. NotebookLM cannot import email, so you open the notebook, paste the text or upload a PDF, then in the Studio panel pick Audio Overview, your format, length, and language, add a focus prompt if you like, generate, wait a few minutes, and download. Nothing makes tomorrow's episode for you. An automated daily version runs on unofficial tooling, reverse-engineered APIs with your own browser cookies, scheduler, and feed hosting, none of it documented by Google.
We timed a week of this with three newsletters a day. Day 1 took about 7 minutes, day 2 took 11, and days 3 to 5 took a few minutes each once the steps were familiar. (Day by day: our October 14 article on the week-long test.)
What does Harkwire do instead?
You forward your newsletters to a private Harkwire address, or pick from a curated directory, once. Every morning, Alex and Sam turn what arrived overnight into one episode in your private podcast feed by 7am. Harkwire never opens your inbox, and paid newsletters are not supported yet.
Length is yours at onboarding: Brief (1 to 3 minutes) and Morning Update (3 to 6) on Starter, plus Deep Dive (6 to 12) on Pro. Starter is $4.99 USD a month for up to 5 newsletters; Unlimited is $9.99 USD a month for every newsletter. Both start with a 7-day free trial, billed through Stripe, and you cancel from the billing page or Stripe's customer portal.
How do they compare?
Price. NotebookLM: free at 3 Audio Overviews a day; Pro $19.99/month. Harkwire: from $4.99 USD/month; Unlimited $9.99 USD/month.
Free tier. NotebookLM: real, 3 generations a day. Harkwire: a 7-day trial that takes a card.
Hosts. NotebookLM: two hosts, four formats. Harkwire: Alex and Sam, daily.
Daily routine. NotebookLM: add, generate, wait, download, every day. Nothing runs on its own. Harkwire: in your feed at 7am.
Feed. NotebookLM: a file and a share link. Harkwire: a private feed for Apple Podcasts, Overcast, and Pocket Casts. Spotify takes no feeds by URL.
Source grounding. NotebookLM cites your sources; Docs and Sheets re-sync on change. Harkwire uses forwarded newsletters, no per-claim citations.
Customization. NotebookLM: formats, lengths, languages, focus prompts. Harkwire: three episode lengths.
Where does NotebookLM win?
Research is where NotebookLM wins. It reads sources of up to 500,000 words or 200MB each, cites them back to you, and lets you steer format, length, language, and focus. For a syllabus, a dossier, or a market file, the free tier is hard to beat.
What is the fine print?
Harkwire. A card starts the 7-day trial. The feed is private and never public, Spotify cannot play it, and paid newsletters are not supported yet.
NotebookLM. The free tier caps Audio Overviews at 3 a day, and Google says quotas can change. A compute-based model was announced in September 2026, budgets refreshing every few hours, but the official page still shows daily counters, so treat it as partly confirmed. Uploaded sources are snapshots; only Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides re-sync. Our timing used three newsletters in one notebook; a bigger stack or the new limits could change the minutes.
Which one fits your mornings?
NotebookLM fits document work you control. Harkwire fits the pile you just want to hear: forward once, press play at 7am.
